To some, Sarah Joncas’ work may seem melancholy, but we find a bizarre sweetness and sincerity in Joncas’ signature paintings of women in solitary positions of contemplation or mourning. True, the subject matter may seem sad, but the way Joncas is able to attach such universal emotional truths to experiences we’ve all gone through is more than comforting.
