20 Questions with CARLOS DIAS

Carlos Dias eschews concepts. His original art is born in the streets of Sao Paulo, in his band’s concerts, in his record collection, and flows into canvases painted with acrylic paint, markers, crayons, sprays or whatever comes into his hands.
This Brazilian creator wowed us with his answers to our set of 20 Questions, which we asked him to answer in anticipation of his upcoming participation in SÃO PAULO, curated by Brazil’s Choque Cultural Gallery in association with Jonathan LeVine Gallery, opening this Saturday, February 28th at Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery.
This guy truly has a great perspective on art, life, and everything in between.

20 Questions with SILVANA MELLO

Silvana Mello is a Brazilian artist who explores the irony of advertising’s artificial happiness with everything from enamel painting on tiles to express the comfort of home, to carvings on a skateboard and woodprints to express the aggressiveness of urban life.
Mello is part of the fantastic group show, SÃO PAULO, curated by Brazil’s Choque Cultural Gallery in association with Jonathan LeVine Gallery, opening this Saturday, February 28th at Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery in Culver City.
Mello provides a unique and rich addition to the group show, and after we saw her delicate work, we wanted to know more about this artist. Luckily, Mello is one cool lady (and quite ballsy, as she admits she went to jail when she was "a punk, everyday I was fighting on the streets") and took the time to answer our 20 Questions for us.

The lovely Lola has been quite the busy bee lately. Fresh off her recent solo exhibition The Wondermental at Corey Helford Gallery, she now has another solo, Natural Beauties, slated at CoproNason Gallery.
The Natural Beauties exhibition finds Lola exploring the unique worlds of supposed ‘outcast’ elements in nature. These intricately rendered paintings provide a rich context for the artist to pursue the truly soft and gentle essences of these shy creatures.
Along with her solo exhibit, Lola worked closely with the gallery to curate a group exhibition called Superschool. The exhibition boasts an impressive array of master painters in the new contemporary style, including: Travis Louie, Gary Baseman, sas Christian, Chet Zar, Day May, Amy Sol, Mia, Nathan Spoor, Heiko Mueller, Martin Wittforth (work shown below), and more. Impressive.
Both shows open to the public on Saturday, Match 7th, 2009. Grab more info at www.copronason.com

We just got word of an interesting way to combat the falling economy: sell a Banksy piece, an artist who typically sells his original work for hundreds of thousands, for just one penny. Now that’s something we can finally afford.
Yep, Brahma Beer and Artichoke have joined forces to raffle off a chance to buy a signed Banksy print, Trolleys, for only one penny. Beauty (and value) really is in the eye of the beholder.

Robbie Conal’s Art Attack

Long time Beautiful/Decay collaborator, Robbie Conal, is a prolific street artist and master oil painter who was recently interviewed about his creative upbringing, his roots in NYC’s art scene, and why he says, “Paint can do all kinds of tricks that I can’t do […] C’mon, we’re partners.” A perfectly symbiotic relationship, no? Hear the man talk himself in the video from Osmosis TV above.

Up and coming Mexican street and studio artist Saner will be coming to the San Francisco Bay Area for a solo show at Anno Domini. Titled Confesiones de Una Mascara (Confession of a Mask) the exhibit invites viewers to reflect on the hidden and sacred tradition and root of oneself: the core of the human being.
Saner’s work aims to inspire and explore the popular and native ‘cosmovisión’ of Mexico. Saner uses the mask to “draw converse lines between the state of mind of persons that hide behind masks and the external: the liberation our character needs to searching for one’s lost and forgotten identity.”
Opening Friday, March 6, 2009, Confesiones de Una Mascara will remain on view thru April 18, 2009 at Anno Domini.

Videogames have increasingly bridged fissures between technology, art, and entertainment, successfully offering gamers a fun venue to stretch their competitive legs while taking in some state of the art graphics.
So it struck our interest that Microsoft and FromSoftware announced today that Xbox 360 exclusive “Ninja Blade” has gone gold and will ship to North America on April 7th, 2009. FromSoftware, well-known for their work on “Armored Core” and the “Tenchu” franchise, created a modern ninja epic where Ken Ogawa and his team of skilled fighters battle a terrifying disease that transforms the citizens of Tokyo into an infected monster horde. Armed with an extensive arsenal of ninja weapons and abilities, including Ninja Vision and Todomé Attack, players confront grueling challenges in their mission to save humanity. The stunning graphics make this game mind-blowing.
You can download the “Ninja Blade” demo for free starting March 9th, which will provide players with a first look into the world of Ken Ogawa and a chance to battle the monster horde before the game drops in April.
