In the last 7 years Steven “ESPO” Powers (Juxtapoz cover #83) has created a new way of painting, a hybrid of text and image that functions as a screen shot of his mind. The machinations of social interactions, the struggle to understand ourselves, dumb jokes, and the futility of changing a world that is perfectly happy with destroying itself are all recurring themes in Powers’ work, also making him one of our all-time favorite artists.
For his debut show in Belgium, titled Semaphores of the Soul, Powers is pulling together his best work of the last 7 years, and putting forth a dozen new paintings to effectively map out the area he has claimed for himself in his paintings.
Semaphores of the Soul opens today, January 29th at Alice Gallery and will remain on view thru march 7th, 2009. Details at www.alicebxl.com

Naked chicks wearing gas masks. Every guy’s dream, right? You can thank artist Mike Marcus for delivering some of the most explosive imagery the streets have seen in a while for his obsession with gas mask-clad naked chicks then.
Mrcus runs much deeper than mere pulp imagery, though. “I spent the best part of 7 years in the Middle East which had a massive impact on my art,” he states in a new interview on Senses Lost. Read it all right here.

What are you inspired by? The age-old question of artists and creatives is answered in this video interview of TACKZ while in Jacksonville, Florida.
“Inspiration’s always there for me. […] I’m always inspired everything I look at, everything I see, colors, objects, even the way people speak,” the artist says. “It sounds cliché, but whatever I put up, it’s what’s in me. That’s all any artist does: translate what they see into something visual.”

We used to built waaay too many fantasy worlds out of these lil guys from playmobil as kids. Although these aren’t legitimate new playmobil releases, we love the concept.
Strange how we played with clean-cut little versions plastic pieces of fun, and still ended up associating with artists and hoodlums. Now, if they had made graf-inspired characters and accessories when we were little, would be have ended up as doctors and lawyers? Just a weird thought…

“I’m painting a lot in the street,” Brazilian street and fine artist Titi Freak wrote Juxtapoz this morning. Yeah, ya think? Just take a look at this new mural. “It was for a documentary from Argentina about the graffiti in Sao Paulo,” the artist explains.
Those documentarians definitely asked the right guy to film, as Titi Freak has been a major part of Brazil’s street art scene; a scene that, in the past few years, has exploded to proportions even we continually find ourselves in amazement of.
Titi Freak also filled us in on his upcoming new book which will be in production soon, and the news of a large upcoming installation he has planned for Los Angeles alongside a small group of fellow artists. We can’t wait to see what he has in store, but in the meantime, take a look at the other photos he sent us over here…

Dan-ah Kim just broadened her artistic repertoire to include that of music video creator. Yep, Brooklyn-based illustrator Dan-ah helped create a video for the band, Asobi Seksu, which she co-directed with filmmaker Aaron Stewart-Ahn and illustrated/animated. The video is for Me & Mary, their first single off their new album called Hush.
“It was made under a very tight budget and tighter deadline so it may be rough, but it was great fun to work on,” Dan-ah told us. Considering all restraints, we must say it looks fabulous. So what’s next, Miss dan-ah?
