Fairytale of Berlin, curated by Janine Bean and Matthias Bergemann of Janine Bean Gallery in Berlin, opens on January 17th at Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery in Culver City.
Berlin attracts artists with its substantial network—affordable apartments and studios, along with private and public international institutions eager to support artists of all backgrounds. Exploring the legend of creative life within Berlin’s many sub-cultural niches, Fairytale of Berlin will look at the consequences, both good and bad, of what happens when aspiration and reality collide in this setting.
The participating artists originate from Germany, Rumania, Canada, Switzerland, Bulgaria and the United States. They identify with living and working in Berlin, albeit in the most different of ways, but come together to create a subtle and fresh approach: Berlin as a new or old home is the common source of inspiration and friction. They represent different art scenes within Berlin, covering various art genres and techniques.
The 11 artists and one artist group of Fairytale of Berlin will show paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and installations, including work by: Erik Andersen, Paula Bogati, Vanessa von Heydebreck, Franziska Klotz, Mari Lou, Iva Vacheva, Ingo Mittelstaedt, Christl Mudrak, Irene Pätzug, Thomas Stüssi and the duo of neulantvanexel, Marian Neulant and Axel van Exel.
The opening reception will take place January 17, from 7 – 10pm and will run through February 7th, 2009 at the Scion Installation LA Gallery.
